Review: Daiya Cheese

Hello, Good morning, and welcome back to another Honestly though food review. I give honest opinions on vegan food items so that you don’t have to waste your time or money trying to find great options. Today we are tackling one that seems to have split opinions. Some say it’s delicious, some say it tastes like plastic. I’m talking about Daiya cheese!!!  now lets get to this review and hope I don’t make any cheese puns.

Initial thoughts: This isn’t the first Daiya product I’ve had, so I went in with a fairly high expectation.  I was excited to use the shreds for tacos and pizza as well as stack the thick slices onto sandwiches. The texture among the shreds and slices are very similar, with the shreds being slightly grainy.  While all their cheese is advertised as being just as melty as the rel thing, it actually didn’t melt very easily, and when I did finally get it to melt, it didn’t do so easily. What the cheese didn’t do melt-wise, it did make up for in flavor. The cheddar has a slightly pungent umami flavor to it, and the mozzarella and provolone we tried had a sweet smokey quality to it. All-in-all, it was a good mock cheese.

Final Verdict: Daiya makes a solid option for cheese. there are better cheeses if you are looking for an ooey, gooey, melty quality, but a Gouda option (get it? OK one is enough).

Score: 7/10.
